I’d like to sign up as a member, what do I need to do?
Congrats on making a great decision! We only do sign-ups in person so please bring a valid credit card to our open house Thursday nights between 7-10pm. You’ll need to sign a few documents and get a general orientation on how to access the space and on our safety procedures. You’ll be issued a key fob which will grant you access during the specified hours.
Stationary powered tools can only be used after you are certified to use that specific tool. Certifications take place concurrently with Shop Clean Up Days (SCUD) which happen regularly but not on a fixed schedule. Alternatively, you can take a class on that tool or demonstrate competence to an instructor.
You must be 18 years of age or older to join as a member, however if you are under 18 and interested in what we do, you are very welcome to join us at our Thursday open house nights.
What exactly does Site 3 do?
We are an inclusive community makerspace located in the heart of downtown Toronto. We are 100% volunteer run and are an Ontario registered non-profit organization.
We provide the space and equipment for our community of makers, inventors, teachers, students, tinkerers, and artists to work with, inspire, and learn from each other.
In addition to the monthly fee, all members are expected to contribute some time and energy to the upkeep and improvement of the organization and shop space.
We have regular classes open to the public for all of our shop areas and more. As well, we host regular meetups for various topics.
Our members exhibit their work independently throughout the year but we come together as a community each year at Nuit Blanche to put on a group show.
I’m not a member and I have a project I need help with. Can I hire Site 3 or is there someone there who can help?
As an organization we do not take commissions as we are not a manufacturing company nor a hiring hall.
That being said, we have an incredibly talented and knowledgeable membership and there is probably someone who can help with your project. You will need to join as a member yourself or find a member on your own to see if they can help. Both of these can be done during our open house Thursday nights 7-10pm.
How does Open House work?
Just come on by, no registration is required but feel free to RSVP with a brief introduction if you like.
Assume that open house is happening every Thursday 7-10pm unless clearly stated otherwise on our social media or Google Maps page. The door will be unlocked and people will be spread out between the two floors. Someone from the admin team will be there and happy to answer questions, give you a tour, or sign you up for a membership if you like.
There is no fabrication or operation of powered tools allowed during open house hours but if you need some advice this is a good time to bring your project by and get some help.
Do you offer drop-in usage for non-members?
We do not offer drop in at this time. Your options for access are to join as a member, take a class, or to come in during our open house night Thursdays 7-10pm.
Do you offer short term memberships?
Yes you are free to join or cancel at any time, however it’s not encouraged. A 3 month membership would be the minimum suggested length of membership to get certified on the various tools and get an idea of what we do as an organization.
We rely on members to donate their time and energy to the upkeep and improvement of the space and to the administrative side of the organization so integrating new members into this system takes time.
As well, stationary powered tools can only be used after you are certified to use that specific tool.
Certifications take place concurrently with Shop Clean Up Days (SCUD) which happen regularly but not on a fixed schedule. Alternatively, you can take a class on that tool or demonstrate competence to an instructor.
Can you tell me when course will be running? How much are courses?
All courses are posted on our Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.ca/o/site-3-colaboratory-532442187
Are there any physical barriers to access at Site 3?
Access to our facility has two steps at the front door. As well, our facility is spread out over two floors with access to the second floor via a set of stairs only.
