The Heart Machine is inspired by the 2010 Burning Man theme and In Fritz Lang’s 1926 movie Metropolis. In the movie the main character asks, “It was their hands that built this city of ours, father. But where do the hands belong in your scheme?” His father answers, “In their proper place – the depths.” Without the citizens of our metropolis, the heart machine does not exist.

Scale Concept Drawing (missing the 20 interaction arteries & veins; check back for new images after April 17)
The heart machine is a collaborative project which combines sculptural structures, flame effects and technology to create compelling interactive art that welcomes and needs participants.
The Heart
Within the space of the heart machine there is the central heart held together by years of repairs.
Flame Effects
Participants must complete the heart machine circuits by working together. Once a connection is made, the switch is turned on and a large flame effect is their reward. The possibilities of what is created by participants depends on their imagination.
Interaction Stations - Coming Soon
Surrounding the heart in amongst the flame effects are several interaction points that require “humans” to care for and acknowledge. Although pilot lights for the flame effects are lit, the heart machine means nothing without the laying of many hands.
