Cubitron for Mooseman

Christine Irving is looking for volunteers and a lead for “Cubitron” for Mooseman

Build will be happening at Site 3, and if we make this happen, we can keep this awesome structure on permanent display!

Work Required to Make Cubitron Happen:

• IMPORTANT MUST: One project task master driver who will own all the get ‘R’ dun activities including whipping
• One Weekend Day or 2 week nights of 5 – 7 consistent people to do wiring of all the LEDs to the main controller board (this will not take long if a group of people sit down and just do it assembly line for 6 hours (there are only 64 to do)
• 1 – 2 people to drill 80 ping pong balls (extras are always required as we will fuck up balls)
• 2 people to make sure the wiring is numbered and create the structure needed to hang the balls
• 4 people (can be people from drilling group or structure group) to assemble the balls in the right order within the cube structure
• Test it with the controller: Already pre-programed and ready to go
• Set it up at Mooseman and enjoy the Toronto-made Cubitron

Another successful Mask-making workshop wraps up

Site 3 member and costume guru Adam Smith ran another awesome leather mask-making workshop this weekend!

Upcoming classes include “Learn to Make Chainmail”. Chainmail AND a leather mask? That’s practically an entire new wardrobe. Come let Site 3 clothe and educate you!

We have new tools!

Site 3 has just acquired a new milling machine and lathe. Can’t wait to get my hands on them and start machining my dreams into reality. We now have TWO lathes, a laser cutter, several drill presses, a table saw, mitre saw, routers, a horizontal bandsaw, more soldering irons than you can shake a stick at, and a million hand/power tools, but I’m most excited about the mill. Mini Maker Faire Toronto is this weekend!

One more sleep until Mini Maker Faire Toronto! This weekend, May 7 & 8, a swarm of makers, crafters, designers, and nerds of all stripes will descend on the Evergreen Brickworks for Toronto’s first ever Mini Maker Faire. Site 3 and the Treehouse group have been working away getting this event organized and we’re hoping to see you there! To get an idea for what Maker Faire is all about, check out the short film We Make Things by Ryan Varga.

Tickets are $10 for the day or $15 for the whole weekend. For kids it’s $5 for the day and $7.50 for the weekend. For information on how to get to the Brickworks, check out their website or the official Mini Maker Faire site.

Automatypewriter

Preview videos of Jonathan Guberman’s Automatypewriter have swept the web (Boing Boing, Slashdot, Design Boom). From Jonathan’s own description at his site, Up Not North:

Introducing the Automatypewriter, a new way to experience interactive fiction! A typewriter that can type on its own, as well as detect what you type on it. By reading what it types to you and responding, it can be used interactively to play a game or participate in a story (in this case, Zork).

This very cool device was created here at the Site 3 Colaboratory. Combined the solid physical mechanisms and digital conventions and content creates an experience that’s great fun to experience.

There’s much more planned both in hardware and software/content. Jonathan’s currently working on a second typewriter. Incorporating the lessons of the initial build and upgrading to a beautiful old Oliver typewriter that’s engineered like a military hardware.

The hardware is designed as a platform for a new text adventure game being created by Toronto novelist Jim Munroe. So 2011 promises much with the exciting unveiling of the complete Automatypewriter experience.
