Summer 2012 Artist in Residence program

Site 3 is happy to announce our inaugural artist in residence program for summer 2012! We can’t wait to see what you create. Here are the full details:

Site 3 coLaboratory Artist in Residence program

When is the residency?

June 1, 2012 to Sept. 1, 2012

Where is the residency?

Site 3 coLaboratory, 718r Ossington Ave, Toronto, ON, Canada.

How To Apply:

Send the following to info@site3.ca by 11:59pm on April 30th, 2012:

As your cover letter, introduce yourself and provide a no-more-than 750-word essay on why you want to come work with us. We need to know who you are and what you’ve done and why you think we’re a good fit for you.

Attached to e-mail, submit a project proposal totalling no more than 1000 words and three supporting images that tells us how you intend to use the shop space and the shop equipment.

What You Get:

  • Three months access to Site 3 coLaboratory, with key.
  • Free access to any normal member workshops hosted in the period, ie: basic equipment training classes. Example: Laser.
  • Funding for liquor licence and normal liquor, portable toilet, etc. for display show at end.

What We Need You To Supply:

  • You will organize a full display of work produced for a show-off event at the end of your residency; a lightning talks round, a DJ night, something to display the work you’ve done.
  • A report of what you’ve done for our website, so we can promote you. And us, of course.
  • You will need to be present to participate in events such as the Hackerspaces Art Crawl on the 16th of June.

Who Qualifies:

We are looking for artists and artisans with a view to the future. Preference will be given to those not previously affiliated with Site 3, although of course we would like to see a broad range of response. Preference will be given to interdisciplinary project proposals which incorporate a high level of technical accomplishment with some element which could not be easily achieved without the support of Site 3. We are open to proposals from emerging artists (“The Youngs”), but emerged artists (“The Olds”)  are also specifically welcome to apply. There will be no preference given to one material technique over another.

We want to see some amazing things. We think you have some idea of what you want to make. Come make it with us.

Hot Metal

Paul and Lauren are members who make metal things..The quest for a Site 3 logo belt buckle is ongoing, but their equipment is definitely getting sexier!

Molten aluminum in a graphite crucible :) Heating coils are 20 gauge nichrome wire connected to 120V AC. Insulation is ceramic fiber blanket in a steel bucket. Consumes around 1200W and requires minimal supervision.

More open house goodness

Fun with lightning, video auditions, an intro to Arduino course, oyster shucking, and popping corn with nichrome.

Ladies’ Sunday Afternoons

  • Are you a lady?
  • Are you interested in what Site 3 does, but have never come out because (x)?
  • Sunday Afternoons from 1pm to 5pm, the site is now open quite specifically to ladies.
This is open to anyone curious about the shop, associates, members, women looking for a kick in the ass to come out to the shop.
So! Come out to the shop. Build a bookshelf. Make video games. Knit something. Knit something out of chainmail. Lathe something. Use the laser to cut your relief plates for that printmaking project. Chain-stitch something on the Union Special. Use our resources, learn something new, decide if you’d like to be a member or an associate; similar to open night, if you come out often enough, we will start gently nudging the Membership/Associateship Box in your direction. In the meantime, please visit!
We are here to help (distribute the future more evenly).
Caveats!
Alex will eventually need a volunteer Ladies to help with this, and much like Associate’s Night, it may end up being By Appointment. There are still classes running at the site – Flame Effects class, for example, on the 26th of February, may result in Ladies’ Afternoon being downstairs only.
It is an experiment. Let us see if it works out. If you are a manz and a member, you’re still welcome, but this is primarily For The Wimminz. Baby steps.

Vacuforming Heads!

Derek's 3D printed head with Dana's vacuformed mask!

Last night at the open house: Dana’s home-made vacuforming efforts resulted in a bunch of people leaving the shop with a mask of Dana.

“I think Halloween this year is going to be a blast!” – Dana

” I would like to order a stormtrooper costume please. ” – Paul Walker

Site 3 coLaboratory – how does it work? (part 1)

Hi-ho, syber reporting here! One random Thursday in November, myself and Michelle-the-intern chatted with a couple of Site 3 members about what they were doing there. We didn’t warn anyone we were doing this, so there’s lots of activity and background noise, and as it turns out – that’s exactly what Site 3 is about.

So Site 3: it’s about being loud and burning things without getting in trouble.

The next video will hopefully feature our hardworking founders; Alex and Seth, who are teaching a flame effects class very soon!
